Duties

This position is located at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI (695) - a Level 1a Complexity VHA Facility and is organizationally aligned under the Architectural Shop, Facilities Management Division. The purpose of the position is to perform work assisting Architectural shop staff in the maintenance of the campus buildings and structures. The major duties include working individually or as a member of a team, performing a variety of tasks that require the application of knowledge and experience gained on previous and similar assignments; performing Laborer related activities for the Architectural unit including, but not limited to: utilizing small tools (i.e. screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, electric drills, hammers, vice grips, levels, etc.) to disassemble / assemble relocated furniture, shelves, bookcases, and any other items requiring minor work to relocate/reassemble; mixing of materials for patching sidewalks or tuckpointing and brickwork; clean worksites and shop areas: perform basic laborer/helper activities within the Architectural shop to assist with timely execution of renovations, repair projects, preventative maintenance, etc., load, unload and move heavy boxes, bulky supplies and materials. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7 AM-3:30 PM and may be required to be present to provide off-hours support for utility outages, maintenance and projects support, etc. Physical Requirements: Work assignments require moderately heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as occasionally lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds. They frequently lift and carry moderately heavy objects weighing up to 40 pounds; and frequently push heavy furniture on dollies, loaded carts, etc. Assistance is usually available with heavy items. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping is required. Routine climbing and work in high places on ladders and roof tops can be required. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Work outside is in all kinds of weather. Work involves frequently climbing ladders and scaffolding and works in awkward positions. Assists in lifting and carrying assemblies to be installed. Subject to the hazards of the trades such as cuts, bruises, dust, dirt danger of falls from ladders or scaffolds, eye and hand injuries when working with power equipment or occasionally subject to work in foul air where animals or pets have been kept. May work on "locked" wards and contagious wards. May be exposed to moderate or high noise levels, sawdust, various fumes, and other hazards. Incumbent may be required to wear a respirator and other protective clothing and equipment.
