This position is in the Audiology Section of the Operative Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Responsible for providing comprehensive clinical services as well as ensuring that work assignments of the other members of a clinical team are carried out.
Has clinical program responsibilities in the management of multiple complex and combined disorders for the Audiology patient population.
Identifies avenues for further services, community collaboration/integration, and areas of performance improvement for the overall program and patient care.
Applies advanced practices and therapies exceeding the expertise of a full performance Audiologist on a daily basis.
Provides orientation/training of medical staff.
Provides patient and family education including informed consent.
Functions as a team leader and is responsible for ensuring that work assignments of the other members of the clinical team are carried out.
In the absence of the Section Chief, Incumbent oversees the professional practice of Audiologists and health technicians.
Identifies the customer's/patient's situation properly and perform the tasks required to resolve the customer's/patient's problem accurately and in a timely manner. Follows-up, as necessary, to ensure a satisfactory resolution.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
2. Education. The individual must possess either of the below:
Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech- Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. HR office staff and management officials may verify the program accredited from CAA at www.caa.asha.org
OR
Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech- Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AuD programs in audiology.
Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. Such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs.
3. Licensure. Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
4. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the above Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Grade Determination criteria below:
Supervisory Audiologist, GS-13:
Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs identified below.
Skill in communicating established performance benchmarks to a service or equivalent organizational department.
Skill in implementing continual performance improvement activities to meet performance benchmarks
Ability to perform a full scope of managerial responsibilities.
Ability to lead audiologists, speech-language pathologists and/or professionals within associated disciplines.
Ability to develop contingencies to ensure continual service operations.
Preferred Experience:
Three years experience as an Audiologist working in an outpatient setting.

The full performance level of this vacancy is 13.
Physical Requirements: May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment.
