Duties

DUTY 1: Radiation Protection Regulatory Compliance. Responsible for compliance with radioactive materials licenses as well as federal, state, and local regulations. DUTY 2: Contamination Surveillance. Coordinates and administers all aspects of the assigned contamination surveillance requirements through application of professional knowledge and skill in health physics and laboratory practices, processes and techniques. DUTY 3: Instrumentation. Performs work requiring professional knowledge of radiation measurement systems, instrumentation, and techniques. DUTY 4: Packing, Shipping, and Receiving. Follows proper procedures for the packing, shipping (within the US and international), and receipt of radioactive materials.

  • Certain aspects of the work involve exposure to many hazards and discomforts, such as toxic chemicals, high noise levels, and excessive heat. The employee is required to use a variety of protective equipment and clothing.

Qualifications

This is a GG-11 position in the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS). The GG-11 duties for the "Technician/Administrative Support" work category are at the "Senior" work level and are equivalent to those at the GS-11 level. The selectee's salary will be set within the grade equivalent to a GS/GG grade based on the selectee's qualifications in relation to the job. In order to qualify, you must meet the Specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience listed below: EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must reflect the quality level of experience which demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for successful job performance required for this position. Examples of specialized experience include: Knowledge of and experience in working in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. Note: Creditable experience may include previous military experience, experience gained in the private sector, or experience gained in another government agency. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Extensive knowledge of advanced principles, theories, and practices of health physics and the physical sciences as they apply to radiation protection areas and able to apply new methods and theories to newly developed technologies as they are used in USAF operations. 2. Knowledge and experience in the calibration, optimization, use and troubleshooting of health physics instrumentation, to include ionization chambers, proportional counters, Geiger-Muller counters, gas-flow counters, inorganic scintillators, and semiconductor detectors. Knowledge and experience in the process for identifying, characterizing, and disposal of radioactive and mixed wastes utilizing the processes required by regulation, permit compliance, and USAF instructions. 4. Knowledge of and experience in performing complex external dosimetry, internal dosimetry, shielding activity, calculations, radiation safety and health physics auditing functions, scientific and technical knowledge of radioactive materials use, permitting, licensing, behavior and regulations, and practical knowledge of the Air Force and management of radioactive materials in the Air Force. 5. Ability to quickly assimilate disparate data and render knowledgeable and accurate assessments of the implication of such data; to make decisions, estimates, and recommendations under conditions of urgency and pressure based on mature judgment and experience, and to present and argue for a position effectively. 6. Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED: 1. Position is designated special-sensitive and requires eligibility for access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), other intelligence-related Special Sensitive information, or involvement in Top Secret Special Access Programs (SAP) to fully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. A non-disclosure agreement must be signed. 2. Drug Testing: This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Testing Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety. 3. Training and experience in the physical or biological sciences or in engineering is desired. Additional formal training in radiation safety management, radiation dose assessment, and emergency response is preferred. Five years prior experience with radioactive material measurement devices is desired. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
