This position is located in Grand Canyon National Park, in the Interpretation Division.

Duties

This is a Career-Seasonal position located in the Canyon District (backcountry) of Grand Canyon National Park and is subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season is March through December but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions. Major Duties: Engage the public through presenting a highly varied suite of formal structured programs (e.g., walks, talks, tours, presentations, demonstrations, events) and informal contacts/conversations with the public. Plan, design, develop, and improve interpretive materials such as signs, waysides, publications, exhibits, and audio, video, and other digital content. Coordinate the operation of backcountry visitor facilities and/or information desks located at Phantom Ranch, Havasupai Gardens, and Cottonwood/Manzanita. Train, mentor, coach, and evaluate a broad range of interpretive programs and products conducted by fellow interpreters. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Area Information: This position works within the Canyon District (backcountry) and is stationed at Grand Canyon National Park at the South Rim located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is located approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures on the South Rim range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter, while summer temperatures at Phantom Ranch can exceed 110 degrees for extended periods of time. Annual precipitation averages between 1-13 inches. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 75,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities. South Rim Housing: Permanent and Term employees with a Full Performance Level (FPL) of a GS-09 or WG-8 and above will be provided the option of accepting assigned housing, participating in the normal bid system, or accepting shared housing. Permanent and Term employees with an FPL of GS-08 or WG-7 and below may be provided the option of participating in the normal bid system or accepting shared housing. Any employee assigned to shared housing may continue to bid into non-shared housing. Backcountry Housing: The employee typically works tours of eight consecutive days in the backcountry. While on-duty, quarters will be provided at the Canyon District Ranger Stations (Phantom Ranch, Havasupai Gardens, and Cottonwood/Manzanita). These are shared housing facilities in which there are private bedrooms, shared bathrooms, kitchens and laundry facilities. The ranger stations are fully furnished. Canyon District Ranger Stations do not have cell service and minimal to non-existent internet access. Personal supplies are transported via mule or helicopter once per week to most backcountry ranger stations. These facilities must be vacated at the end of each tour of duty.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/16/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Your resume must include hours per week worked. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader, work in a park, recreation or conservation area, environmental education, history and/or cultural resources education, and natural sciences education. Work will include independent research and presentation. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one (1) full year of graduate level education in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). The education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. You must include transcripts. -OR- SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT (S.A.A): meet at least one of the three requirements listed below for Superior Academic Achievement - Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree (must be in a course of study that directly reflects the job-related knowledge, skills, abilities competencies necessary to satisfy the minimum qualifications and perform the duties of the position) with Superior Academic Achievement: 1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR, 2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR, 3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies: https://www.achshonor.org/. You must include transcripts. -AND- To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience could include park ranger, or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management; work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work. This work includes: (1) revising educational or interpretive programming to align with feedback or educational standards; (2) delivering presentations to the general public; (3) responding in writing to comments or feedback from the public about organizational programs or services; (4) answering questions orally from the general public about organizational policies or procedures. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a masters or equivalent degree, 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or a LL.B or J.D. related to the work of this position. The education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Examples of qualifying education include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (Two years of graduate education is 36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours). The education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
