Duties
SUMMARY (Continued):
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
DUTIES:
As a Museum Technician, you will perform the following duties:
Unpacks objects and processes them; performs limited cleaning; identifies preservation needs and recommends additional actions. Repacks objects with care, assuring complete labeling that preserves data associated with the objects.
Identifies and labels objects by matching documentation field labels, notes, etc. with the objects.
Prepares objects for storage or display. Inventories, documents, and stores items, assistance provided in situations not covered by instructions or guidelines.
Places objects in storage, maintaining the organization already established by the supervisor.
Catalogs objects. Enters cataloging data into the designated NPS catalog program using established NPS procedures.
Prepares, maintains, and organizes manual and automated curatorial records including accession records, catalog records, and donation forms; maintains and organizes other records, such as inventories and object lists. Files records in accession folders and affixes catalog numbers to objects. Maintains and updates cataloging and database.
Performs routine research for catalog records, exhibits, and other purposes as assigned.
Implements museum maintenance and housekeeping schedules. Performs routine cleaning of objects as directed and according to established standards. Assists in scheduled cleaning of museum collections storage.
Implements museum environmental monitoring program. This includes gathering data, maintaining the monitoring equipment, and preparing permanent data records.
Assists with the installation, repair, and rehabilitation of exhibits.
Completes or provides assistance to others who complete the Annual Inventory of Collections.
Provides answers and information to park visitors. Supervises, assists, and monitors all visitors to museum facility as requested/needed, including researchers using the collection. Uses archives and museum collection to provide answers to research requests from outside researchers and from park staff. Refers unusual requests to the supervisor.
Performs a variety of clerical operations in support of the curatorial operation. This may include, for example, handling office records and correspondence; inventorying and ordering supplies; and managing computer equipment, including hardware, software, and databases.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/08/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects includes activities such as: collection management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field to include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed education above high school semester hours of education (that are in excess of 60 semester hours) by 60. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only higher-level education above high school in excess of more than two-years may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
