This position is located within the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Northport, New York responsible for performing a wide range of duties at the journeyman level for the following trades: carpentry, masonry, painting/plastering, electrical, and plumbing.

Duties

Performs the full range of carpentry work involved in the maintenance and repair/improvement of all Medical Center buildings and structures; Completes alterations, modifications and minor construction of items and structures; Installs various types of flooring covers; Lays out and installs dropped ceilings; Installs, repairs, replaces, modifies and overhauls the complete range of internal and external locking devices and door hardware; Performs masonry, plastering and cement finishing work of a maintenance and/or alteration nature; Works with brick, precast blocks of cement, cinder, terracotta wall and finish blocks, glass, quarry tile, marble, ceramic tiles, etc.; Reads and understands drawings, plans and blueprints for laying out work; Performs surface preparation and refinishing of all interior and exterior surfaces; Repairs holes and cracks on a variety of surfaces (i.e. gypsum wall board, plaster and wood); Prepares and sizes walls, cuts trim, wallpaper and/or vinyl; Tapes and spackles drywall constructions; Removes and replaces broken glass; Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoe, tractors, forklifts, dump trucks, etc.; Applies journeyman gardening knowledge (which includes horticulture and landscaping) in the accomplishment of work related to projects, minor improvements and renovations; Assists Journeyman Electricians in a wide variety of electrical work, including troubleshooting, installing and repairing electrical equipment; Utilizes wiring diagrams, schematics and blueprints to correctly complete electrical jobs; Assists Journeyman Pipefitters and performs pipefitting work involving installing, modifying and repairing new and existing utility systems (i.e. steam, hot water heating, condensation return, hot/cold water returns, sanitary waste, medical gases and equipment; Performs other duties assigned as it relates to the position. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

Physical Effort:Uses considerable physical effort in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. Frequently requires to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools. Work requires extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. Uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items. .Working Conditions:Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky, and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
