This Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic position is in Facilities Management services at the White River Junction VA Medical Center, located at the White River Junction, Vermont location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic works as a mechanic, to perform the full scope of operations, maintenance, repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs the repair, minor overhaul, maintenance and servicing of integrated industrial and laboratory reach-in and walk-in refrigerators; cold room equipment, works on single, dual, multi-stage reciprocating-type Freon refrigeration systems; centrifugal chillers; low temperature cascade systems, HVAC units; complex control and distribution systems; and other related equipment.
Regulate equipment and systems to meet temperature criteria requirements.
Diagnoses and locates malfunctions; disassembles and repairs or replaces and/or adjusts thermostats, pressure stats, humidistat, relays, switches, other electronic and pneumatic automatic control devices, includes pneumatic control compressors and related components.
Services and repairs evaporators, condensers, and receivers; repacks valves; replaces electric motors, belts, and pulleys; lubricates moving parts, replaces refrigerants; tests for leaks and checks for excessive load conditions.
Performs soldering and brazing in connection with the repair of leaks or installation of system components.
Uses all hand tools, test equipment, instruments and shop machines.
Observes all safety rules and regulations.
Attends all required Safety, Industrial Hygiene and other designated training courses provided at intervals specified.
Wears assigned personal protective equipment.
Operates and monitors refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
Makes adjustments and repairs as necessary to maintain set temperatures on refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Repair building heating systems such as unit heaters, window units, and other heating systems used at this facility.
Documents work accomplished, inspections and other assignments using appropriate formats and forms.
Applies conventional technical solutions and practices to a variety of problems.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

Physical Requirements: The work required of the incumbent necessitates standing for long periods of time, stooping, bending and frequently working in cramped and awkward positions for prolonged periods. Must be able to lift objects in excess of forty (40) pounds. Incumbent must have good eyesight, depth and color perception, use of all limbs, is able to walk, crawl, climb and squat.
Working Conditions: The incumbent will perform work inside and outside. He is subject to the possibility of cuts, bruises, extreme heat or cold, noise, scrapes, burns and exposure to refrigerant gases (freon). Incumbent is exposed to the danger of electric shock and may be required to work in contaminated and contagious areas with contaminated equipment. Work is frequently dirty and greasy.
