This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: At the entry level, you will serve as a Lock and Dam Repairer Helper in the Maintenance Section, Mississippi River Project Office in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. This position has noncompetitive promotion potential to the WG-5318-08 and WG-5318-10 grade levels.

Duties

General maintenance and repair tasks on lock and dam equipment and machinery and on buildings, grounds, and structures located at lock and dam sites along the Mississippi River. Welding, Pipe Fitting, Carpentry, Painting, and Sandblasting. Cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and replacing parts or other equipment. Adjusting bearings in lock miter gates, culvert valves, and dam gate machinery. Installing machinery and equipment. Repairing or reconstructing lock valves and gates, tainter gates, head and sluice gates. Installing tainter gate side seals and wall lining plates, valve well tracks, guides and seals, and welded lock walls and gate hand railings.

To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience and/or show the ability to be reliable and dependable in the performance of common Lock and Dam Repairer Helper tasks. I am skilled in machine and/or equipment maintenance and/or repair work. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work requires continual physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools, while working from scaffolds, standing, stooping, bending, climbing, working overhead, etc. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, and feet and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. On occasion, may be required to lift and carry items or materials weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside during the day, and at night as required, on high structures over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical wires, and on scaffolds or slings. Occasionally works behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Employee is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury and discomfort, burns, exposure to moving equipment, machinery, loud noises, inclement weather, and dangerous icy conditions.
