Duties
Pathways Internship positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training. At the full-performance level, you will be expected to:
Serve as a student trainee and as such is given on-the-job training and instructions to perform manual duties in a variety of workstations.
In addition to the general manual duties, work assignments are designed to provide learning experience in an assigned skill trade.
Perform manual duties in shop work situation relating to one of following target occupations: (1) MACHINE TOOL OPERATOR; (2) WELDING HELPER
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
- Two year probationary period may be required.
- This position requires a minimum age of 16 years old to participate in the program.
- This position requires a signed Pathways Participant Agreement that sets for the expectation for the internship.
- This position requires the Student Trainee to have and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher for the duration of the Pathways Internship.
- This position requires the student to be a current HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR when applying for this position.

Who May Apply: Students who are eligible for participation in the Department of the Army Internship Program
Positions are open to current students pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled). Short-term training programs (e.g., several two-week programs completed) are not considered an academic course of study.

This intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation as a MACHINE TOOL OPERATOR, entry level of WG-3414-05 leading to a full performance WG-3414-09, OR WELDING HELPER, entry level of WG-3703-05 leading to full performance of WG-3703-10 (PRIOR to the conversion to a full performance WG-3703-10, the EMPLOYEE IS REQUIRED TO FULLY COMPLETE AND SUBMIT A SATISFACTORY WELDER CERTIFICATION). Interns will be assigned tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation in a real-world work environment.
This opportunity follows a standard promotional path:
Within 120 days after completion of Internship requirements, you may be eligible for conversion to the entry-level for the target occupation. Entry level for these positions are typically at the WG-05 level. The actual grade level at the time of conversion depends on academic achievement and other factors.
The full performance level of this position is based on job title and series. (MACHINE TOOL OPERATOR, entry level of WG-3414-05 leading to a full performance WG-3414-09, OR WELDING HELPER, entry level of WG-3703-05 leading to full performance of WG-3703-10 (PRIOR to the conversion to a full performance WG-3703-10, the EMPLOYEE IS REQUIRED TO FULLY COMPLETE AND SUBMIT A SATISFACTORY WELDER CERTIFICATION).
Progression from the entry-level to the full performance level for this occupation will depend on successful completion of all requirements for promotion. Promotions may be considered after a year at each grade level but are not guaranteed to occur on a specific time schedule.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Reliability and Dependability to perform the duties of a Student Trainee (Laborer) without more than normal supervision. I follow oral or written instruction from my supervisor or senior employee. I can assist with skilled trades or craftsmen by fetching tools, materials, and/or equipment; held, moved, rearranged, lifted, carried, and stacked items and objects. I can clean basic hand tools used to complete basic tasks. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires continuous standing, walking, stooping and frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing 10-30 pounds; and occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects weighing 45 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: There is exposure to drafts, noise, dust and dirt. There is chance of minor cuts and bruises.
