This position is located in the Recreation Services Division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Medical Center, San Diego. The Recreation Services Division is assigned the responsibility of providing comprehensive athletic and recreational programs and activities. These services are provided to active duty, retirees, reservist, their dependents and authorized civilian personnel at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego.
Duties
Screen participants for cardiovascular risk factors prior to exercise via a comprehensive medical history and health habits questionnaire. Refers high risk patrons to supervisor.
Recommends means for modifying cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and improving nutritional habits within guidelines recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Assists in designing individualized exercise programs for patrons based on their goals or current fitness status by performing fitness profile testing (aerobic capacity, blood pressure, heart rate, and body composition).
Instructs and demonstrates proper biomechanic technique for use of all strength training and cardiovascular exercise equipment. Explains applicable kinesiology of each machine. Shows patrons how to properly monitor heart rate while exercising and provides patrons with the knowledge of basic kinesiology as it relates to strength training machines and free weight equipment. Demonstrates and explains the importance of warm-up, cool-down and flexibility, with safety being the highest priority.
Assists the Fitness Director in overseeing both proper routine functions of the Fitness Center and special events in accordance with MWR and Naval Medical Center regulations and instructions.
Ensures that all patrons are authorized for utilize the facility. Maintains daily log, recording all pertinent information therein. Conducts daily inventory of all property on charge, and maintained records for same. Issues and rents equipment and lockers, sells resale items, operates cash register, and accounts for receipts. Responsible for daily activity record (DAR's) for receipts of equipment and supplies. Deposits daily cash receipts and change fund in appropriate safe.
Develops educational material for patrons (flyers, bulletin boards, etc.) and designs and implements facility contests for patrons.
Ensures that facility, workspaces and equipment are safe, functional and clean at all times. Operates washing machine and dryer to ensure all towels are clean and available for patron use. Ensures proper opening and closing of facility, at appropriately designated times, as directed.
Incumbent must exercise tact, good manners and courtesy when serving and assisting customers. This will be expressed by tactfully responding to patron inquiries and assisting in a prompt and friendly manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- Must meet federal suitability requirements including successful completion of background investigation.
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, without a fixed schedule. Administrative work is performed in a normal office setting.
- Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends and holidays when the need arises.
- May have to obtain and maintain the following certification within 90 days of hire: Emergency First Responder or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Food Handlers and/or C.A.R.E (Controlling Alcohol Risks Effectively).
- Wearing of protective clothing and equipment may be required as situations warrant.
Qualifications
Incumbent must possess and maintain current certification in one or more of the following organizations: American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Cooper Institute, the International Association of Fitness Professionals (IDEA), National Aerobics Fitness Trainers Association (NAFTA), or other nationally recognized certifying agency or be able to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
Knowledge of basic cardiovascular risk factors, weight loss and nutritional habits, proper biomechanic techniques and fitness profile testing.
Skill in instruction and proper use of exercise equipment.
Ability to handle emergency situations.
Knowledge of publicity materials.
Must possess and maintain a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Ability to maintain records and reports.
Ability to deal effectively with others.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Education
A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
