The typical season for these 1039 positions is March/April through September/October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024.

Duties

Keweenaw National Historical Park (KEWE): Carries out special laboring assignment(s) with knowledge of project requirements and objectives; Digs where soil is rocky and hard to assist with the installation of signs and construction of accessible trail(s); Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and materials; Cuts trees and brush with axe, handsaw, or chainsaw; Moves and stacks logs, brush, timbers, rocks, soil, cement and other materials requiring similar judgement and comparable heavy physical effort; Operates and maintains powered equipment and hand tools to improve or maintain buildings, grounds, roads and trails; Rakes and waters lawns; Trims trees and shrubs; Unloads heavy supplies and materials. Isle Royale National Park (ISRO): Constructs, repairs, and replaces trail walkways and bridges; clears trails, campgrounds, power lines, and developed areas of fallen and hazardous trees. Cuts brush along trails, installs and maintains erosion control devices, installs and maintains signs. Grades and maintains trail tread by hand. Keep a daily log, of work activities, for the Facility Management Software System (FMSS). Must live on the Island in government housing, working and camping for 10 days straight hiking up to 18 miles per day. ISRO positions are required drug testing for motorboat operations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a laborer without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Work Practices (including keep things neat, clean and in order) Ability to interpret and follow instructions, specifications etc. (other than blueprints) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Dexterity and safety. Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of very heavy physical effort in operating large riding mowers; or lawn and garden tractors on grades and in areas with bushes, trees, and other visible obstacles that require significant maneuvering and lever control. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80-100 pounds (or more) with assistance. Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated and ventilated areas, such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. The equipment, tools and tasks involved frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid severe injuries. ISRO only: Living conditions are isolated and crowded. May be away from living quarters in a tent in a very primitive camping situation for periods of time of up to 21 days for all or much of the season.
