As a journeyman electrician, the incumbent is responsible for installing, repairing, testing, fabricating, troubleshooting or modifying the complete range of internal and external electrical supply system, power sources and distribution facilities, shop facilities and equipment, power control and supply system, for motors, emergency generators, industrial equipment and machinery, alarm communications systems, and street lighting.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to;
Bends and threads 1/2 inch through 4 inch conduit with the proper tools.
Uses hand-tools and instruments such as meggers, ohm/volt meters and amprobes; Uses powered equipment such as power drills, pneumatic and hydraulic benders, power hack saws, band saws, and cut off saws.
Maintains electrician trade tools such as pipe threaders, hand dies, drill press, and soldering tools and equipment; Maintain proper and safe use of power tools and equipment, difficult work operations, and safety practices.
Installs, repairs, tests, fabricates, troubleshoots and modifies a complete range of internal and external electrical supply systems, power sources and distribution facilities, shop facilities and equipment, power control and supply systems for motors, emergency generators, industrial equipment and machinery, alarm communications systems and street lighting.
Performs preventive maintenance on all types and voltages of switches, receptacles, lighting, magnetic starters, contactors, relays, and motors.
Repairs and maintains equipment utilizing a wide range of voltages on all secondary systems, from single phase 110 volts through 3 phase 480 volts.
Installs and wires small and larger motors on all types of systems.
Necessitates the application of advanced electrical principles, materials, and safety standards to complete assignments.
Repairs portable tools and appliances.
Knowledgeable of the makeup, operation and installation of a wide variety of electrical systems, fixtures and appliances, controls and equipment.
Repairs a wide variety of electro mechanical apparatus and equipment for the safe and timely operation of life support systems used throughout the facility.
Plans lay out and completes the installation, modification and repair of various systems.
Reads, interprets and applies building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, drawings, and schematics to survey work areas.
Plans and lays out new installation.
Determines type, size, balance, load, and proper and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
Performs trouble diagnosis and analysis of electrical equipment to be installed.
Determines the type, size, balance, load, and proper/safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
Maintains test equipment and instruments; Modifies test equipment and instruments to perform special measurements; Repairs test instruments and equipment; Troubleshoots new and existing electrical systems.

Physical Requirements: The preponderant tasks performed involve standing for long periods while performing installation wiring tasks, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May be required to frequently handle objects and materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally, may lift and carry items that weigh over 20 pounds. The incumbent may work in confined areas and in awkward and cramped positions and nay be exposed to inclement or uncomfortable weather conditions when working outdoors. The incumbent may be subject to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns and broken bones. The incumbent is subject to walking with his/her tools and/or material needed for a job from the shop area to the job site. Incumbent abides by set safety policies, prescribed in VA, local and national safety rules and regulations.
