Duties
Select appropriate medical codes and modifiers for diseases and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures.
Enter data into an automated medical records database.
Train medical records technicians on coding methods and procedures.
Pull reports upon request based on the information needed.
Review medical records information ensuring compliance with quality assurance regulations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying medical record procedures; coding a wide range of diseases/injuries diagnoses using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10 CM) coding guidelines; coding medical/surgical procedures using the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding guidelines; and spot checking medical records to ensure consistency, completeness, and/or compliance with applicable standards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07)
Certification Required: Applicant must possess one of the following certifications listed below prior to onboarding;
1.Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA)
2.Certified Professional Coder-outpatient (CPC)
3.Certified Coding Specialist-Hospital Based (CCS)
4.Certified Coding Specialist -Outpatient (CCS-P)
5.Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
6.Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
7.Certified Professional Coder Hospital Based (CPC-H)
