This position is located in Moab, Utah, and supports the Southeast Utah Group (SEUG): which includes Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Hovenweep National Monument and Natural Bridges National Monument and is under the direction of the Superintendent.
This is a temporary promotion not to exceed 1 year, and can be extended up to 5 years. This temporary promotion may be made permanent without further competition.
Duties
Serves as the park's Public Affairs Specialist. Advises the Division Chief, Park Executive Team and Superintendent on all aspects of media relations. Has lead responsibility in developing and maintaining positive professional relationships with the local, national, and international media (print, television, radio and digital), state agencies and partner organizations.
Develops, produces, and distributes news releases in a variety of formats on issues and activities.
Reaches out to media representatives to assure coverage of park stories; this includes providing informational tours and briefings and targeting specific reporters for stories. Develops and annually updates a Park Media Strategy and Park Profile, as well as media strategies for specific projects and issues.
Develops and implements crisis communications strategies for outreach during incidents, special events, etc. and is recognized as a national communications resource to turn to for incident/event communication expertise.
Supports the Department of the Interior and NPS by preparing briefing statements on Park issues for internal NPS officials and external legislative offices. Provides issue briefings and printed materials on park issues for the staff of elected officials and visiting dignitaries and provides for informational exchange and dialog. Provides technical assistance and expertise to other parks with similar programs and requests.
Area Information:
Headquarters offices for the Southeast Utah Group are located in Moab, UT (4,000ft elevation). Moab provides all basic amenities including doctors, dentists, hospital, schools, churches, and shopping.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Recognizing and using correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicating information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a brief, clear, and organized manner; producing written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience. Writing and editing documents, including press releases, newspaper, management documents, and outreach materials for press, without grammar, punctuation and spelling errors; edit documents created by others; produce, communicate and disseminate information and ideas to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media. Experience working with all aspects of media relations, including strategies, on-camera and on-mic experience You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
