Podiatrist provides care that is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and/or chronological maturation needs of the adult and geriatric patients at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center within this delineated scope of practice. He/She will act under the supervision of the Section Chief of Podiatry. The Podiatrist is an independent practitioner and will render patient care. This is a non-surgical position. Minor procedures can be conducted in clinic setting after proper consent is obtained.

Duties

The Podiatrist demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in an assigned service area, demonstrate the knowledge of the changes associated with aging, and possess the ability to provide care based upon age related factors. REQUESTED AND GRANTED TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING INDEPENDENTLY: Podiatry evaluation to be recorded in the progress notes of the medical record. Evaluate, diagnose, provide consultation, order diagnostic studies, and perform podiatric procedures on foot or ankle with injuries or diseases of the foot and ankle. Evaluate and treat wounds or ulcerations in the lower extremities. Privileges requested are granted for clinical areas, specific procedures and systems. Privileges are granted for clinical areas, CBOCs, specific procedures and systems, and telehealth to include Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT) and Store and Forward (S&F). Evaluate and treat wounds or ulcerations in the lower extremities. All providers requesting privileges in Podiatry are subject to the same application process regardless of specialty consistent with criteria set forth in the medical staff policies governing the exercise of specific privileges. Consultant privileges are limited to the rendering of an opinion and/or advice, initiation of diagnostic or therapeutic services or concurrent care, if requested by the attending physician. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: Staff Podiatrist Medical. None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general podiatric duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision. Staff podiatrists may also include attending podiatrists who train physician residents, assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists perform office based procedures only and generally work a set 40-hour per week schedule. The full performance level of this vacancy is 15. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 15. Physical Requirements: pre-employment physical is required. Physical demands include repetitive body movements including the following: frequent reaching, standing, walking, and lifting of equipment and/or patients to provide patient care. This position requires extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction including above or below shoulder level, during the provision of patient care, including retrieval of needed equipment, supplies and to make contact with the patient.
