This position is located at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Duties
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled and the SECOND area of consideration will be all other eligibles.
The primary responsibility of the incumbent is to operate a dump truck (GVW 22,000 to 33,000 lbs), a street sweeper, 4000 compaction roller and a variety of dumpsters (2 and 5 yard capacity). The incumbent will also be the backup backhoe and excavator operator in the interment section. This position works with the pre-set crypt project team. The incumbent works with dump trucks, dumpsters, and forklifts which are loaded with materials, supplies, and/or equipment. The incumbent will operate the dump trucks and dumpers over the entire area in support of the interment section. Incumbent will also be required to maintain maintenance logs, trip tickets, and operator preventative logs. Some terrain may be uneven or unstable and the operator will be required to make sound judgment. The incumbent will operate equipment over narrow curving roads in generally moderate to heavy traffic conditions. He/she must be able to safely operate foot and hand controls simultaneously.
Must have a valid state Class B driver's license or obtain one within one year.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Physical Requirements: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles. The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Frequently, lifts, carries. and handles items unassisted weighing up to 50 lbs. Hand tools such as rakes and shovels will be used throughout the day.
Works in awkward or strained positions. Constantly reaching, bending, turning and moving hands, arms, feet and legs in handling different sets of controls for the operation of equipment with attachments. In operating equipment, must endure constant vibration, jerking, jolting and noise. Employees may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85dba for up to 8 hours per day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. The wearing of hearing protection devices that will contain the noise level to 85dba or below is mandatory while operating equipment noisier than 85dba. While wearing hearing protection devices, the worker must be able to hear at a level to safely perform duties. Incumbent is required to lift heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of weather conditions and safety must be exercised at all times. The operator will work in heat, cold, rain, dampness and will be exposed to dirt, dust, mud, and extremely wet conditions in the performance of their duties. Employee is exposed to hazards, pollen and unpleasant odors from chemicals used in pesticides, insecticides along with fumes from motors and/or exhausts.
