Qualifications
In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as developing and implementing improvements to occupational exposure assessments and/or health and safety compliance programs; and advising a variety of internal and external staff on policies, regulations, and processes related to occupational health and hazards and industrial hygiene.
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of the professional concepts, principles, and practices of industrial hygiene.
Ability to apply experience and judgment to solve novel or obscure problems.
Skill in the use of the full range of industrial hygiene sampling techniques and instrumentation.
Skill in technical report writing.
Knowledge in the use of quantitative measurement techniques for evaluating the magnitude of environmental stresses and their effects on health, well-being, and efficiency.
Ability to recognize environmental factors and stresses associated with complex work operations, and to ascertain their effects on the health and well-being of workers.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
- A bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
- Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
