About the Position: This position uses expert knowledge to lead firefighters performing firefighting activities controlling and extinguishing fires, crash and rescue operations, EMS response, hazardous material spills, and fire prevention and safety inspection operations.
Special Retirement Coverage: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.
Duties
Direct crews in firefighting activities controlling and extinguishing fires, crash and rescue operations, EMS response, hazardous material spills, and fire prevention and safety inspection operations.
Serve as hazardous material technician in providing hazardous material spill response training and hazardous spill or incident responses and containment.
Provide a hazardous incident analysis using hazard and risk assessment techniques.
Serve as the primary rescuer in fire prevention inspection functions, sprinkler and suppression system inspections and testing and crash and rescue operations.
Conduct fire prevention classes in firefighting, fire prevention, and fire safety inspections.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position meets the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing, thereafter.
- This position requires you possess and maintain a valid stateside driver’s license.
- This position requires a 72 hour a week/144 hours pay period tour of duty which may include working weekends and holidays.
- This position requires you to wear a uniform and/or wear personal protective equipment as appropriate and complies with safety and health directives (OSHA).
- This position requires you to work both inside and outside with possibility exposure to inclement weather.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical fitness assessment and continued participation in a scheduled physical fitness program as directed by current Army regulatory guidance.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- You must meet mandatory firefighter certification requirements as mandated by any current DOD Fire and Emergency Services Manual/Directive/Instruction, Army Regulations, NFPA standards, applicable Federal (CFR and OSHA) guidelines.
- To occupy this position, you must possess and maintain: Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZMAT Technician, Driver Operator - Pumper, and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician Basic (NREMT-B).
- Must acquire and maintain within 24 months of job acceptance; Fire Inspector II, Fire Officer II, Hazmat Incident Commander, Incident Safety Officer, Public and Life Safety Educator and Plans Examiner certifications.
- This position may require participation in the Chemical Incident or Mishap Response and Assistance (CIMRA) situations and serve on teams dedicated to mitigating CIMRA situations.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Must acquire and maintain within 24 months of job acceptance; Driver Operator Arial, and Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
Experience performing firefighting activities such as responding to fires and medical emergencies;
Experience performing fire prevention and safety inspections, hazardous material containment and control, and station maintenance work;
Experience conducting inspections of facilities or buildings, alarm detection, and suppression systems; and
Experience with hazardous material responses.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Maximum Entry Age (MEA):
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age:
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age:
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
