Duties

You will utilize skills and knowledge to plan, layout methods of repair and determine depth of rework. You will design patches, splices, reinforcements, and replacement parts to repair components such as damaged fuselage and wings. You will work with a broad knowledge of the various materials used in aircraft repair, such as aluminum alloys, titanium, and honeycomb. You will use shop mathematics to layout, develop, and manufacture repair parts for structures. You will use various hand and power tools and measuring instruments. You will operate shop equipment such as band saws, drill press, high speed routers, overhead hoist, sanders, heat cure ovens, electronic temperature controllers, heat blankets, heat tables, forklifts, and vacuum pumps.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Physical exertion requires heavy lifting and carrying of objects up to 45 pounds. Any weight to be lifted in excess of 45 pounds will not be attempted unaided.
  • Subject to various noise levels, which continuously exceeds 85 dBA. NOTE: Hearing protection must be worn for noise a level of 85 dBA and double protection is required for levels over 105 dBA.
  • This position requires corrected vision at 13" to 16" to 20/20 and corrected far vision in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Eye protection is required in hazardous areas in the form of glasses with side shields, goggles or face shield.
  • This position usually works at ground level and may require climbing up to heights of 20 feet.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Knowledge of the vacuum and medium pressure assembly bonding and high-pressure laminating techniques in order to assist with the repair, remanufacture, and fabricate high strength primary aircraft structures comprised of advanced composite materials on aircraft and components; 2) Knowledge of composite materials such as aluminum, steel, fiberglass, wood, rubber, paints, adhesives, bonding tapes, catalyzed fillers putties, caustics, chemicals, hydrocarbons, acids, phenolics, foam adhesives, forms of high temp Styrofoam, and epoxy; 3) Using shop equipment such as band saw, high speed routers, sanders, heat cure ovens, electronic temperature controllers, and vacuum systems; and 4) Using devices such as micrometer, depth gages, feller gages, protractors, machinist scale, etc. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website.
