This position is located in the Business Office of the Haskell Indian Health Center in Lawrence, KS. The primary purpose of this position is to abstract and interpret coding data from patient records in preparation and submission of properly executed outpatient third party claims on a timely basis. Incumbent reports to the Supervisory Health System Specialist, Business Office Manager.
Duties
Responsible for accurate and timely preparation and submission of outpatient claims to third party payers, intermediaries, and responsible parties according to established clinic policy and procedures
Performs qualitative and quantitative analysis by reviewing the medical record to ensure it contains proper documentation
Searches and reviews individual patient health records(s) to gather and compile information for outpatient services
Communicates primarily with DHHS operation personnel; Fiscal Intermediary Administration and Claims Processing personnel to identify problems with applications and operating systems

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):Applicants must meet the following typing proficiency:40 words per minute based on a five minute sample with three or fewer errors. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: submitting medical billing claims, correcting billing transactions, and providing technical assistance pertaining to coding and medical billing.
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
