This position is located at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL. and is organizationally aligned under the Fleet Operations. The primary purpose of the position is to provide safety and control over the flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The position functions with officials to develop traffic patterns that are conducive to safety, efficiency, and convenience, within the limits and boundaries leading into and out of designated areas and crossings surrounding the Medical Center.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES Directs and controls the flow of traffic to ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing streets after assessing traffic flow to identify breaks to allow for visibility and safe crossing. Guides motorists through traffic patterns designed to keep pedestrians, visitors, and veterans safe and inform drivers of Medical Center parking guidelines. Promotes safety specific to the traffic laws, signs, and speed limits to effectively guide vehicles and others in a safe manner. Maintains a crossing area that is free of hazards, and employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags, and hand signals. Identifies drivers who are speeding or driving carelessly and notify authorities by documenting their license plate number. This includes preparing reports to document accidents or atypical incidents occurring during shift. Vigilantly watches for impeding dangers to develop effective solutions before and accident occurs. Reports the unsafe behavior of Veterans, Visitors and Staff to VA Police to reduce the risk of someone being hurt. Assists disabled and elderly pedestrians across intersections as required. Answers inquiries and gives geographic directions to the public. Set up and retrieves traffic cones and barricades for traffic and crowd control if needed. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/09/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education s described below: Specialized Experience: You must have six months of general and six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-3 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: general knowledge basic traffic laws, regulations and concepts within the area of operations. Communicate effectively using hand signals, oral commands and radio controls. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of courses in safety, fire prevention, industrial hygiene, psychology, engineering, or in the agricultural, biological, or physical sciences. OR, Combination: : Equivalent combinations of successfully completed 2 years above High School and experience may be used to meet the total experience requirement at the GS-4 grade level. Education must be in access of first 2 year of post-high school education to be considered as described in experience and education. Transcripts Required. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires extended or continuous periods of time standing and walking, bending, stretching, twisting, or reaching out with one's body, arms, and/or legs. Working Conditions: Work is performed under a variety of conditions - outdoors during inclement weather. This includes being subject to cold, hot, windy, wet, or snowy conditions for hours at a time, and may include excessive noise, dust, etc. Protective equipment (e.g., vest, flashlight) is mandatory for use in job areas when needed because of conditions.
