Duties

Assists in the planning, review, and reporting of data/statistical results of program/project studies. Establishes protocols for incoming instrumentation, organizes computerized data sets, and retrieves computerized data. Performs a basic analysis of the data and generates a variety of reports. Evaluates documents, e.g., sampling Surgical set instrumentation, work-flow and Censitrac information, usage reports, and other data collection forms. Coordinates incoming data from a variety of sources. Reviews documents, reports, and/or applications for omissions and inconsistencies, and ensures data entry is complete and accurate. Coordinates instrument maintenance and repair coordinating with SPS Management, Biomedical repair technicians, contractors, and other vendors. review maintenance requirements with clinical and surgical services and track items requiring maintenance and repair. Creates tracking documents for GLA instrumentation, leased items, consignment items, and specialized instrumentation requested on an as needed basis for procedures performed within the facility. Performs other related duties such as etching individual instrumentation and application of tracking devices/tools/materials for heat sensitive endoscopes to add into the Censitrac Product Catalog; creation configuration of inner and outer containers for sterilization; creating and updating container count sheets; adding media pictures and PDF files for product reference and instrument reprocessing instructions; create and run utilization, sterilization, and productivity reports for SPS; troubleshooting of Censitrac peripherals such as scanners, PDAs, Zebra printers, and all-in-one touchscreen monitors; and training and support to all users of Censitrac for WLA VA and outlying clinics. Compiles reports on compliance for all areas, uses IAHCSMM, AORN, AAMI Handbooks and established Policies with applied supply principles, concepts and methodologies to determine policy compliance. Incumbent reviews levels, policy implementation and reports items not in compliance. Functions as the backup to the Censitrac Coordinator for the facility. This incorporates all policies and SOPs into the Censitrac system. Queries databases to obtain adequate and pertinent instrumentation and inactive item data on which to base decisions on item descriptions and surgical set utilizations. Recommends adjustments to processes to reflect routine interventions required by changes in usage rate, missing instrumentation, workflow times and other similar activities. Incumbent contacts and inspects end user area(s) for compliance. Implements new processes and reviews RME activities with the RME Coordinator to ensure compliance with manufacturer instructions within the Censitrac System. Monitors Quality Assurance data collection, responsible for the inventory control of products needed during course of reprocessing, to maintain current and accurate information and coordinate maintenance of equipment and instrumentation. Follows Process Flow guidelines as developed by Central Office, VISN Service Line management, and facility Surgery. In addition to monitoring and compliance of guidelines, must review and evaluate guidelines, provide recommendations for change and updates to processes in effort to improve timeliness, reduce costs, improve quality assurance JCAHO/patient safety mandates, and meet new/updated policy Directives and Handbooks. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and/or Education. (1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with Veterans Affairs Handbook 5005. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Coordinator Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06). To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with Medical Supply Technician. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds in order to assess the needs of the department. Ability to coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion. Ability to interpret and apply sterile processing/infection prevention regulations and policies. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment. Ability to initiate and lead interdisciplinary groups in carrying out sterile processing functions. The grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-07. Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation. On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. The employee wears special clothing, hair covers, personal protective equipment and shoe covers that can be uncomfortably warm. The employee uses insulated gloves to remove carts from sterilizers. The employee is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items. The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gasses are unknown. The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are encountered while decontaminating bloody or grossly contaminated instrumentation or reusable medical equipment. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.
