The primary purpose of this position, FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT DISPATCHER, GS-2151-06, is to serve as Firefighting Equipment Dispatcher at Hanscom AFB Fire Department with delegated responsibility for receiving all types of fire alarm, medical, aircraft, hazardous materials, & mutual aid emergency calls & dispatching a wide variety of emergency vehicles & personnel to Hanscom AFB, & off base responses.
Duties
-Maintain logs and reports for Operations, Fire Prevention, Administration, and Fire Alarm Communications Work Center recording all vehicle movements and personnel activities throughout the entire Fire Department.
-Answer all incoming telephone calls and obtain or provide information as required.
-Operate the service call function after administrative duty hours, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
-Execute activation of Fire Department and base level recalls for firefighters as requested by senior fire officers, the Director of Civil Engineering, or the Installation Commander.

- The actual work performed in this position has been reviewed and determined that it does not meet any of the exemption criteria defined in 5 CFR 551. This position has been designated as nonexempt.
- This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
- SECURITY CLEARANCE: INCUMBENT MUST BE ABLE TO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE LEVEL SECURITY CLEARANCE AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.
- DRUG TESTING: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN DESIGNATED FOR DRUG TESTING. IF YOU ARE SELECTED FOR THIS POSITION YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO URINALYSIS TESTING PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT AND YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO RANDOM URINALYSIS TESTING AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.
- Incumbent is required to meet Massachusetts State NG9-1-1 certification as outlined in state requirement guidelines, within one year of initial employment start date.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05), pay band or equivalent. Specialized experience is described as dispatching of firefighting apparatus in support of the Fire and Emergency Services, including prehospital emergency response; providing support to the administration via telephone answering and message taking; involved in maintenance of fire incident and operations records and reports, as well as in data collection and processing to include monthly, quarterly, and annual response metrics.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of basic and specialized fire alarm systems equipment, operation, techniques and procedures, to include research and retrieving information from various guidebooks and other resources.
2. Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and technical orders.
3. Knowledge and ability to learn computer programs in order to track vehicle status, manning, personnel assignments, resolve discrepancies and prepare reports.
4. Skill in operating complex communications systems such as multi-line telephones, two way radios, alarm equipment, public address systems and voice recording equipment.
5. Familiar with the disaster preparedness emergency response plan, firefighting techniques, equipment capabilities, various types of structures, mutual aid agreements/department capabilities.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
*Incumbent is required to meet all certification levels as outlined in National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1061, "Standard for Qualifications for Public Safety Tele-Communicator", Public Safety Tele-Communicator I, Public Safety Tele-communicator II (Reference: NFPA 1061 Chapter 5 & 6), within one year of initial employment start date.
*Incumbent is required to meet Hazardous Materials Awareness certification as outlined in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Reference: OSHA 191.120(q)(6)(i)), within one year of initial employment start date.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency/intensity levels with irregular breaks and mealtimes. The duties of this position create a highly stressful environment during peak activity, requiring the ability to keep calm in emergency situations. There are no special physical demands.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is typically performed in an office setting except for occasional visits to protected areas on the installation, which involve ordinary risks and discomforts and require normal safety precautions.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
