Duties

Administer the Industrial Hygiene Program for US Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center and US Army Materials Technology Laboratory. Develop procedures, directives, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), or other written materials to implement and document the Industrial Hygiene Program at each location. Conduct periodic surveys in coordination with Safety Department and Occupational Health Services of working conditions. Oversee necessary sampling to quantify extent of hazardous exposure. Maintains and insures calibration of industrial hygiene equipment. Prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for hazards control. Enters data into DOEHRS-IH in an accurate and timely manner. Work with engineering systems, material substitution, or the use of personal protective devices, or work with engineers to develop control measures, in ventilation systems, material substitution, or the use of personal protective devices. Annual responsibility to conduct industrial hygiene hazard analysis in BSL2 labs and to review the SOPs for handling various chemicals in laboratory procedures. Conduct required annual Hearing Conservation Training and Blood Borne Pathogens training and possible Workstation Ergonomic Safety Training. Identify employee exposures to be used as the basis for the medical surveillance program. Provide education, including individual counseling, group teaching, written material and other training aids.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Employee is required to wear protective equipment such as respirators, safety glasses, safety shoes, face masks, coveralls, etc. as needed.
  • Employee is required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time, as well as bending, climbing or crawling.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Tentatively selected applicants will be required to sign a DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent MUST submit to annual seasonal Influenza Vaccination.
  • Position has been designated Mission Essential.
  • Requires completion of a Financial Disclosure (OGE 450).
  • Tier 1: Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting evaluations of work operations to assess potentially hazardous environmental conditions; perform inspections of work sites to ensure compliance with safety plans and occupational health regulations; recommend controls and corrective actions of industrial hygiene problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
