Duties
As a Biologist you will:
Perform various techniques to rapidly identify and characterize biological and/or other agents that cause a number of diseases.
Determine study requirements, resources, equipment needs, etc.
Identify methods and procedures to collect data, and conducts experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments.
Ensure that incoming specimens are processed and triaged maintaining "chain of custody."
Prepare reports on scientific investigations, studies and projects.
Apply knowledge of the technical rules and procedures applying to scientific projects and programs to document and prepare analyses and reports of findings for tests and studies.

Basic Qualifications:
Education: Have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Have a combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications GS-09:
To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, which must include the following experience: performing biological scientific work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological agents.
OR
Education: Have completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the duties of the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Minimum Qualifications GS-11:
To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, which must include the following experience: performing scientific work involving studies of the functions, environmental response, biological activities, and/or processes of humans and animals, and their component parts.
OR
Education: Have completed 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
