This Vegetation Ecologist position located in Yellowstone National Park, in the Yellowstone Center for Resources. The full performance level (FPL) of the target position that the Recent Graduate can be non-competitively promoted to is a GS-11. Open to the first 50 applicants or 02/09/2024 whichever comes first. Duties

Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor. The major duties of the Vegetation Ecologist position include, but are not limited to, the following: Plan and conduct research aimed at monitoring and reporting the impacts of vegetation management practices, namely control of invasive plants, removal and reintroduction of forests, and native plant restoration of disturbed sites. Evaluate resource conditions and problems and interprets trends, correlations, and interrelationships among data and conditions. Assist with restoration planning and implementation. Serve on interdisciplinary resource teams to determine project impacts to vegetation. Prepare project reports which include literature research, methods, data analysis, graphs, results, and recommendations for planning, protection, and mitigation activities. Organize and conduct revegetation projects. Knowledge of and practice using sampling protocols, risk prevention procedures, and strategic planning. Develop, carry out, and fully document statistically valid data collection protocols for vegetation monitoring projects using advanced technology such as electronic data collectors when appropriate. Perform data entry and carry out quality control checks on data collection and entry performed by others. Determine and document the significance of findings and interpret them for managers. Communicate with subject matter experts, administrators, resource managers, and other park staff. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. AREA INFORMATION: The position is within the Division of Yellowstone Center for Resources, at Park headquarters, located in Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12th grade, in Gardiner, Montana, five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for schoolchildren between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/09/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. In order to qualify for the position, you must meet the following: BASIC REQUIREMENT for GS-408 series: A degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. In addition to meeting the basic requirement you must meet one of the following: To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Monitored and reported on resource conditions and identified problems; collected field data contributing to the basic natural or cultural resources inventory or a monitoring program to assess status and trends of resources condition; identified species or sites, measured conditions and environmental parameters; measured and reported on impact and effectiveness of management activities that affect resources, such as, restoration programs, developments, visitor dispersal strategies; drafted workplans and implementation strategies; accomplished simple restoration or mitigation actions or participated as a member of a team accomplishing more complex projects; assisted in coordinating the work of visiting professionals; led and trained others in specific skills; and assisted in preparing reports, graphics of technical data for manuscripts, presentations, or in-house summaries. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related to the position being filled. You must include transcripts. -OR-Successful completion of an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester.
