Duties

This position serves as the principal authority overseeing the archeological resources, historic structures, ethnographic resources, cultural landscapes and museum collections of Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks. The incumbent works under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent. The Division of Cultural Resources works together with the Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent to carry out the National Park Service's Cultural Resource Management (CRM) program for both national parks. Serves on Regional and Service-wide committees, as requested, for the development and implementation of policies relating to cultural resource management. Researches, composes, and writes letter and answers to suspended park correspondence such as Congressional inquiries, review of service-wide Directors Orders, and inquiries or comments from the park's constituents.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/20/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. To qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements for one of the series below: Basic Requirement for the Social Science, GS-0101: Degree: behavioral or social science or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Combination of education and experience: that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four years of appropriate experience that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to the major in the field -OR- Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Basic Requirement for the Historian, GS-0170: Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. -OR- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement for the General Anthropology, GS-0190: Degree: appropriate field of anthropology. -OR- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education. -OR- Experience: Four years of experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work. Basic Requirement for the Archaeologist, GS-0193: Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology. Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa. Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development. Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques. Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND: Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school). -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. -OR- Experience: Four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project. AND In addition to the minimum qualifications above, applicants must also possess the following: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: serving as the principal authority overseeing the archeological resources, historic structures, ethnographic resources, cultural landscapes and museum collections of park site or organization. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
