Duties

Maintenance Workers perform trade work assignments associated with the maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings, exterior structures. This also includes maintenance related to utilities such as water works, electrical, A/C, and heating systems, as well as related fixtures such as tables, signs, shelters, water systems, pumps, and equipment. Other duties may involve cleaning restrooms and comfort stations, collecting and removing trash from facilities, and performing routine grounds maintenance (fertilizing, transplanting, laying sod, pruning, trimming, mowing, etc.). A typical work assignment requires a familiarity with the practices, equipment and tools used by the maintenance personnel in accomplishing their assigned duties. This includes operating, under supervision, equipment and tools such as heavy trucks, tractors, backhoes, forklifts, lawn mowers, power saws, drills, cutting torches and electrical testing equipment. Maintenance workers may also perform herbicide spraying and operate chainsaws. An understanding of some of the common practices and tasks of the painting, plumbing, carpentry, cement, electrical, masonry, air conditioning, and heating trades are required.

WG-07:At this level, Maintenance Worker duties performed at any one time might include those above the simpler and more routine duties of the helper level jobs, less difficult than the journey worker level, but up to and including, under close direction, journey worker level duties. Jobs involve learning such trade practices and skills such as a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Typical work assignments include the performance of visual examinations and operational tests to determine the need for and the performance of repair work on a level of difficulty and responsibility of trades such as painting, carpentry, cement, and plumbing. Duties may also include driving trucks up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, supplies, materials, equipment, and tools on paved, gravel and dirt roads within cities, forests, and federal facilities. Physical Effort: Works on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops, and in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Duties require the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Heavier items may occasionally be lifted with assistance of lifting devices or other workers. May work on steep terrain covered slash and debris. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside, often in the presence of dirt, dust, grease, and fumes. Assignments involve exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, cuts, bruises and infects. Workers may be exposed to bad weather. Duties often require the use of protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
