Duties

As the Supervisory Dairy Scientist (Lab Manager) in this position, you will: Supervise and develop laboratory staff and ensure that specified lab performance metrics are met. Oversee the laboratory's analysis of raw milk for fat, protein, lactose, and solids by infrared and wet chemical techniques, and somatic cell count using direct microscopic counts. Interact with dairy industry and/or laboratory representatives to address industry testing needs or problems. Work with laboratory staff in other Federal Milk Orders on common projects and issues. Oversee the proper operation of lab equipment and ensure that testing regimens and results are in compliance with Quality Management System (QMS) guidelines. Analyze lab data and test results using spreadsheets and graphical analysis to produce reports. Keep apprised of industry milk testing topics so you can recommend and or adopt new testing methods and/or improve current processes as appropriate. Oversee the evaluation of cooperative and/or private industry testing laboratories for proper operation and/or performance issues. NOTE: This position falls under pay bands MA 10 - 22. Selectee's pay will be set between the MA 18 - 19 pay bands based on years of education and/or experience.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application. Basic Requirement: Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in a physical or life science with at least 15 semester hours in chemistry, microbiology, or dairy and food related sciences AND at least 6 semester hours of mathematics or physics. OR Have the appropriate semester hours described above for the position and experience that, when combined with education, would equal a 4-year course of study. The experience must equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform at the grade level to which appointed. Professional Experience Qualification Requirements: In addition to the above-stated basic requirement, you must have three (3) years or more of professional experience in a field directly related to the position to be filled. This professional experience is as follows: (1) Performing laboratory analysis of milk for fat, protein, lactose, and solids and somatic cell count of raw milk by infrared and wet chemical techniques; (2) Using Kjeldahl analysis, enzymatic lactose assay, and/or direct microscopic counts to determine milk content; (3) Supervising the operation of dairy lab or milk processing facility, or (4) Analyzing data to create test reports to present to stakeholders. This experience must be comparable in scope and responsibility to Federal service or obtained either in private or public sectors. Part-time or unpaid experience: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Volunteer or unpaid experience: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
