Job opening: MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER

Salary: $33 - 38 per hour

You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER in the FACILITIES MAINTENANCE AND SUSTAINMENT DIVISION of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

You will serve as working leader over at least three trades and crafts employees, and as coordinator/team lead between supervisor and teams of employees. You will lead a group of diverse tradesman who perform the full range of work encompassing the trades of Electrician, Air Conditioning Mechanic, Carpenter, Pipefitter, Maintenance Mechanic, Sheet Metal Mechanic, Plumber and Fire alarm technicians. You will provide safety guidance to team members. You will report to supervisor on status and progress of work and causes for work delays. You will perform own work as a journey level maintenance mechanic performing predominantly new work as well as maintenance and repair work on buildings, exterior and interior structures and related utilities, facilities and components.

  • Incumbent must comply with PWD Safety Manual, NAVOSH safe work procedures and OSHA worker safety standards.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • May require possession of a valid Environmental Protection Agency Universal Certification for working with all types of refrigerants at high and low pressures.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1 - Knowledge of basic mechanical principles and techniques. Must be able to disassemble, repair and reassemble pumps for rotary seal replacement, bearing replacement, determine condition of shaft, impeller, wearing rings, and other related parts and implement repair procedures as necessary, Incumbent must know procedures involved in coupling alignment and pulley alignments. 2 -Knowledge of the principles of compressor operations, repair procedures and troubleshooting techniques. Incumbent must be able to maintain accurate logs and maintenance reports. Incumbent must be able to use the tools necessary to perform these tasks. 3 - Knowledge of standard plumbing methods and techniques. Must know how to measure, cut bend, thread pipe, tile, caulk, and seal such things as elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets and shower drains. Incumbent must have the skill needed to remove, clean, reinstall or replace joints and fixtures, such as traps, faucets and unions. 4 - Skill to hook up equipment to existing systems, and replace sections of pipe following previously used routes, hangers and levels. Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with simple fractions. Must have skill in the use of tools and equipment such as tapes, rules, hacksaws, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, packing and caulking irons and pipe wrenches. 5 - knowledge of standard pipefitting methods and techniques. Must be able to measure, cut, bend and thread black steel, wrought iron and copper pipe. Must have the skill needed to remove, clean and reinstall traps, regulating valves, and steam controls. Incumbent must be able to hook up equipment to existing systems and replace sections of steam pipe by following previously used routes, hangers and levels.
