The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY, in Police Services.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Performing maintenance tasks such as checking fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, inspecting hose connections and tire pressure, and washing the vehicle; Operating passenger or ambulance buses modified with a lift for wheelchair patients, weighing over 10,000 pounds (10-53 passengers); Responsible for the safe transport and comfort of passengers; Defensive driving and adjusting to the conditions of the patient and the road are essential; Disruptive patient behavior or conflict is possible and must be addressed professionally, courteously, and appropriately; Responsible for reports of contact for any incidents; Operating vehicles with gross weights of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. All vehicles are equipped with air brakes. They are operated over uneven terrain, improved/unimproved roads, and congested areas on both short and long hauls; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday As determined by Facility needs, the Motor Vehicle Operator will work on irregular tours of duty such as 6:00am to 2:30pm, 8am to 4:30pm and 11 :30am to 8:00pm. The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: LICENSE REQUIREMENT: A current, valid and unrestricted state issued Regular (Class B with passenger endorsements) driver's license (We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show proof of such before selection.) PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning,, backing, controlling and coupling vehicles which carry heavy loads and a large number of people. Considerable effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Operators frequently handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and highways and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents. The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange system. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
