This position is located in the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics (LGG), Intramural Research Program, National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), in Baltimore, Maryland.

Duties

As a GS-0401 Biologist (Bioinformatics), your duties may include but are not limited to the following: Critical member of the research group and is involved in the implementation of computer technologies used in analyzing data. Provides expert, state-of-the-art genomics research and bioinformatics support in the form of data analysis, database design and implementation, computer/software programming, and troubleshooting software problems in support of the research team. Serves as an expert resource on bioinformatics solutions to the compilation, storage, retrieval, analysis, and dissemination of next-generation and nanopore sequencing data. Implements, designs, develops, and innovates current and emerging computational biology and bioinformatics algorithms to generate, analyze, interpret, visualize, summarize, and illustrate vast amounts of genomics, epigenomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and proteomics data generated from NGS and nanopore sequencing from population studies, mammalian and non-mammalian model organisms. Assists the research team in planning, developing, implementing, and integrating long- and shortrange plans and strategies for a balanced and comprehensive intramural research effort. Researches, designs, and delivers training materials, courses, presentations, and workshops to effectively communicate, promote, and advance computational biology techniques and software usage by NIH researchers. Provides state-of-the-art research and bioinformatics support as a member of the PI's research team, in the form of development, modification, and utilization of bioinformatics applications; data analysis and interpretation; database design and development; and troubleshooting and guidance on the effective use of bioinformatics applications specific to spatial transcriptomics, and, in particular, utilizing cutting-edge analysis programs to infer biologically relevant results from genomics, epigenomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, proteomics and multi-omics data sets. Participates as assigned in the development of organizational and Institute-wide bioinformatics practices and policies. Provides input in the formulations and documentation of Institute-wide and agency-wide bioinformatics-related policies and procedures. Prepares responses to requests for information from other NIA organizations, NIH, HHS, Congressional offices, and other organizations, regarding areas of assigned responsibilities.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Biologist (Bioinformatics), GS-0401 position, you must have: A. Completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR B. a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. AND In addition, in order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position at the GS-12 level, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Assists in applying, adapting and modifying laboratory methods, procedures and techniques for a biomedical research organization; using state-of-the-art bioinformatics algorithms to assists in analyzing data sets utilizing next-generation sequencing data; preparing documents for publishing results in scientific journals or other related professional publications or presenting information at scientific meetings. In addition, in order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position at the GS-13 level, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Providing bioinformatics technology support in compiling, analyzing, and disseminating data for biomedical research programs; applying, adapting and modifying laboratory methods, procedures and techniques for a biomedical research organization; Independently developing, planning, and implementing biomedical research by using state-of-the art technology and; developing and preparing scientific reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations.
