Duties
As a participant in the Pathways Intern Program, you will receive both formal and on-the-job training to develop the required knowledge and skill to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Serve as trainee working closely with team leader and supervisor in a training capacity on assigned tasks.
Observe and assist Senior Rangeland Management Specialists to develop skills in Range Management.
Perform site visits on grazing allotments to conduct observations of where, when, how many, and type(s) of livestock are grazing. Observations are documented or recorded using compliance inspection or use supervision forms.
Rides (i.e. vehicle, horse, UTV/ATV) allotment to assure proper distribution and movement of livestock.
Make vegetation counts from small plots to determine such information as survival of seedlings, species, distribution of plants, and volume of growth.
Provide impressions of range conditions, and similar observations.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required upon conversion. Must be at least 16 years of age.

- You cannot hold an active real estate license; nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Land.

- Appointment will be subject to a favorably adjudicated background/suitability investigation/determination.

- Currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited school.
- Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Range degree program in a qualifying educational institution.
- Educational enrollment MUST be on a half-time or full-time basis. Half-time basis is defined by the academic institution that the student is enrolled or accepted into.
- You must be able to physically report to the duty location that you are selected for.
- Students that have graduated are not eligible for this position.
- Must sign an approved participant agreement upon entry on duty.
- Must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.5 grade point average on a cumulative basis throughout your internship.
Qualifications
This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.
To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, an applicant must:
Be at least 16 years of age. AND
A student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); You must upload an unofficial copy of your transcripts. AND Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum. AND
Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.5 grade point average on a cumulative basis; You must upload an enrollment letter from your educational institution (Whether you are new or currently enrolled). AND You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED). Please be sure to include this information in your resume.
For GS-02: You may qualify based on completion of high school or equivalent.
For GS-03: You may qualify based on completion of 1 full academic year (30 semester hours) of post-high school study.
For GS-04: You may qualify based on completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree in a related field.
You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements.
CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Interns may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
Be a US Citizen
Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
Complete their degree or certificate requirements.
Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted.
Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement
Perform their job successfully.
Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance. In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640-hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work.
This position has eligibility to be converted to a term or perm appointment in the competitive service. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted. If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be a full performance level up to a GS-11, the target position and full performance level may change based on the need of the organization at that time. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted.
Extensions: This appointment may be extended without further competition based on the need of the organization for the work to continue and provided the individual continues to meet the eligibility requirements.
CAUTION FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR FINAL YEAR: Students that are graduating and are not subsequently enrolled in another program might not meet the work-hour requirements prior to graduation and will be at risk for not being able to convert to a career or career-conditional appointment!
*Spring 2024 graduates will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment in the form of transcripts, acceptance letter or other appropriate documentation for Summer 2024 or Fall 2024 at the time of tentative selection. If no proof of continued enrollment is provided at that time, you will no longer be eligible for this internship.
Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours.
Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

To be eligible to convert student must meet the following education requirements:
- Degree: range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows:
- Range Management -- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.
- Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences -- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.
- Related Resource Management Studies -- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management. - OR -
- Combination of education and experience: at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
