The Motor Vehicle Operator is assigned to the Transportation Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS), at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. This position will provide service to: Two Medical Centers located in Gainesville and Lake City, FL Three Large Ambulatory Healthcare OPC's located in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and The Villages, FL Nine CBOC's located in Ocala, Middleburg, St. Augustine, Palatka, Perry, Marianna, FL and Valdosta, Waycross, and St. Mary's, GA.

Duties

IMPORTANT: Incumbent must possess a State Operator's Permit Class B or Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement and with NO air brake restrictions. Licensing information must be clearly stated on your resume. Major Duties Include (but not limited to): Operates a diesel-powered semi-tractor up to and exceeding 33,000 pounds with an attached trailer. Operates box trucks up to and exceeding 33,000 pounds. Possesses the skill to deal appropriately with the public, patients, and employees daily. Transports patients, laundry, food and personnel and other items essential to the operation of a VAMC. Read and write at a level which allows for adequate completion of vehicles log, trip tickets, vehicle inspections, passenger logs, and other documentation related to passenger transport. Loads and unloads patients, laundry, food, and cargo safely. Possesses skills to be versatile enough to operate multiple vehicle weight categories. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/05/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: May exert moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. As a Motor Vehicle Operator, must use sound judgment; maintain mental and physical poise. Must handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more with or without assistance. May assist on an infrequent basis, medical personnel, or staff in the transfer of stretcher patients to and from beds and stretchers, and the loading and unloading of patients to and from stretcher vans. Tasks often require physical exertion such as walking, turning, stooping, bending, etc. May handle food containing objects weighing 50 pounds and occasionally more with or without assistance. Must ensure food refrigeration temperatures are maintained in compliance with Federal, State, County and City regulations. Must ensure to always use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. May have to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) while performing patient transportation operations duties. Administrative functions are generally performed within an office. A substantial portion of daily activity involves the transporting of linen, food, passengers, and patients. Operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Is exposed to weather conditions and the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, sprains etc. Work areas may be dusty and or dirty. Must adjust hours of work to meet the needs of the unit and to complete the mission and goals of the VHS. This position may require working overtime, in uncontrolled environments, in vehicles and on the highways. Occasionally is subject to uncomfortable conditions.
