This position is located in the Mental Health Service at the Iowa City Health Care System - Iowa City VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA. The Psychology Technician is responsible for administering and scoring various panels of psychological, neuropsychological, psychophysiological, and behavioral tests ranging over several hundred different measures and possible combinations.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Test Administration and Analysis: Performs psychological, neuropsychological, and psychophysiological tests on patients. Administers, scores, and interprets results of tests. Tests are of varying degrees of length and complexity and administers according to procedures in scoring and professional manual and clinical literatures. Establishes comfortable relationship with examinees to reduce discomfort and anxiety and to promote optimal performance during the assessment. Conducts data evaluations and analytic tasks utilizing a computer and software applications. Documents observations of patients' behavior, appearance, and attitude during testing and communicates findings orally with multidisciplinary clinicians. Inputs patient data/demographic information and test data into electronic files. Stores and retrieves information and requests patient data. Documents actions taken or outcomes in the medical records. Program Support and Training: Maintains current and complete stocks of assessment materials, monitors security of test/stimuli storage, and recommends new equipment and purchases and maintenance based on value and reliability in operation. Maintain psychological test equipment and ensures adequate supply and quality of test forms and protocols. Maintains instructional materials and teaches students and others precise methods. Ensures clinical test data is electronically entered in a quality improvement database. Collaborates with database administrators to update procedures for data storage and access requirements. Participates in the design, planning, and coordination of psychological assessment activities. As prescribed by the psychologist, may assist in other patient-related activities, conduct training, participate in research, and may engage in the delivery of certain paradigms of cognitive remediation/treatment as specified. Performs other duties as necessary. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Requires a Bachelor's (or higher) degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an appropriate social or biological science, which included or was supplemented by 12 semester hours in psychology. AND SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. The SPF for this position is: Experience performing psychological and neuropsychological tests/assessments on patients. In addition to the English Language Proficiency, Basic Education, and Selective Placement Factor, applicant(s) must meet one of the following: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires two full years of technical work under the direction of a professional psychologist in a program of professional services, training or research. At least Six months of such experience must be comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the nest lower grade level (GS-8) in the Federal service, or One year comparable to the second lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes applying principles, theories, methods and techniques of psychology to administer, score, and interpret psychological test results and document observational findings; entering and maintaining patient electronic medical records; and collecting/analyzing data. NOTE: Experience under the direction of a professional psychologist is required and MUST be documented on your resume. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed Twofull years of graduate study in psychology in an accredited college or university. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Database AdministrationEducation and TrainingInterpersonal SkillsProject ManagementPsychology IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, although the stress involved in continually working with persons in emotional and physical distress and who may be uncooperative, poorly motivated, obstreperous, or possibly assaultive, makes this position appreciably more demanding than most sedentary lines of employment. Manual dexterity, proficient handwriting speed, physical agility, some degree of physical exe1iion (i.e., moderate lifting of test supplies, records and equipment), walking/mobility, listening, writing, and sitting for prolonged periods of time are required.
