This position serves as a Pipefitter in the Construction Section within the Facilities Management Service Line at G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center. DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation.

Duties

As a Pipefitter, you will: Install and operate high- and low-pressure piping systems, plumbing systems, and related equipment (such as steam heating, steam generators, vacuum systems, radiators and circulating pumps). Install plumbing fixtures such as sinks, water closets, drinking fountains, hot water storage tanks, and hot water producing equipment such as dishwashers and laundry equipment. Align pipes, valves, fittings and joints for accurate match. Install valves, traps, and unions needed for proper system operation. Install and operate relief valves, check valves, pressure regulators, expansion joints and other pressure supporting and controlling devices to control pressure, flow, and circulation. Figure pressures and fixtures units within a system and ensuring that piping, valves, fittings and equipment are proper for the work. Install the proper braces and supports to control movement and vibration while allowing for expansion and contraction. Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints to use shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs and circles. Perform work assigned orally and through written or electronic work orders based on building plans and blueprints. Determine the proper placement and elevation to install steam generators, vacuum and condensate pumps and radiators. Plan and lay out the installation, modification and repair of new and existing piping systems, plumbing systems and equipment. Lay out and install piping, risers and flexible branches at the proper level and incline. Plan and lay out the needed routing, placement, pitch, incline and elevation of systems and equipment. Use welding, brazing and other tools to lead joints of cast iron pipes and solder copper tubing. Use hand tools common to the pipefitting trade, including wrenches, sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, chalk lines, plumb bobs and templates. Use power tools common to the pipefitting trade, such as drills, grinders, pipe threaders and cutters. Test systems and equipment for proper circulation, flow, pressure, leak-free joints and proper drainage. Diagnose plumbing system malfunctions by isolating the problem, checking through the system, and making appropriate repairs or modifications. Use resources, such as cameras and other tools, to find the root cause of a problem or system failure, correct the failure and prevent future re-occurrences. Trace and troubleshoot pipe lines, systems and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD84227A Physical Requirements: Work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable conditions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal fo strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds.
