This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: You will function as an Engineering Technician with the Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District, Engineering and Construction Division, located in Nashville, TN. This position may be filled at either the GS-05, GS-06, GS-07, GS-08 or GS-09 level.

Duties

Develops, designs, material quantities, layouts, sketches, details and perform design calculations for mechanical and electrical design features projects in hydropower, navigation, recreation, flood control and military projects. Develops sketches, layouts, detailed designs and working drawings of project features. Prepares preliminary and final drawings of engineering and architectural projects utilizing a computer aided drafting and design systems (CADD). Computes dimensions, determines placement, space and clearance requirements, and selects and develops most advantageous views. Compiles, computes, plots and checks a variety of engineering data. Computes and checks material quantities using prescribed source data, standard formulas, tables and manuals. Develops detailed designs, plans, specifications, material quantities, layouts, and sketches utilizing specialized CADD systems. Checks shop drawings for size, dimensions and number of components when so directed, and resolves issued concerning errors found.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position may require Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) over 25% of the duty time.
  • May be selected at any grade level with non-competitive promotion potential to target grade. Non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. To qualify at the GS-5:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes executing basic engineering drawings; assisting in the development of electrical and/or mechanical features of hydropower, navigation, recreation, flood control and military projects; assisting with software utilization such as developing sketches, layouts, detailed designs and working drawings of project features; preparing preliminary and final drawings of engineering and architectural projects utilizing a computer aided drafting and design systems (CADD). This definition is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-4). OR Successfully completed a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. At least 6 of the 24 semester hours must have been in drafting if the position has been designated by a drafting area of specialization. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Have the specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have some education leading to a bachelor's degree but less than required in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) To qualify at the GS-6:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes executing basic to moderately complex engineering practices, methods and procedures to develop designs, material quantities, layouts, sketches, details; developing electrical and/or mechanical; perform design calculations for the mechanical and electrical design features of Corps of Engineers projects which include features of hydropower, navigation, recreation, flood control and military projects. This definition is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-5) Some federal jobs allow substitution of education for experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, there is no substitution of education for experience. To qualify at the GS-7:Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes executing AND reviewing engineering practices, methods and procedures to develop designs, material quantities, layouts, sketches, details; developing electrical and/or mechanical; performing design calculations for the mechanical and electrical design features of Corps of Engineers projects which include features of hydropower, navigation, recreation, flood control and military projects; conducts site investigations as required to collect data for development of and compliance with design. This definition is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-6) Some federal jobs allow substitution of education for experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, there is no substitution of education for experience. This definition is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-7) Some federal jobs allow substitution of education for experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, there is no substitution of education for experience.
