The South Texas Veterans Health Care System is seeking a Podiatrist (Chief, Surgical Services) who demonstrates leadership abilities and overseeing surgical programs at the Audie L Murphy Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, TX. A Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized for a highly qualified candidate.

Duties

The Chief of Surgery provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for Surgical Service to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals and applicable performance measures.Duties include the following: Responsible for administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for Surgical Service to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals within the South Texas Veterans Health Care Services (STVHCS) to include inpatient (acute care and critical care), outpatient services and operative services. Surgical subspecialties include General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Gynecology. Meets organizational access targets regarding surgical services, and timeliness measures within the operative services and serves as the Chair of the Facility Surgical Workgroup with oversight of quality and safety of surgical services. Provides direct supervision to the Surgery Section Chiefs and to ensure that clinical staff function within their privileges to meet organizational goals for quality, safety and productivity. Functions as an administrator, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory of collaboration between Surgical Service and other services. May supervise medical students and residents and other trainees. Must establish and maintain effective relationships with all levels of medical center personnel and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels. Maintains full clinical privileges as a member of the Medical Staff. Reports administratively and clinically to the Deputy Chief of Staff. In addition, may report to the Chief of Staff for programs assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:-00 am - 4:30 p.m.) VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Licensure and Registration: Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Physical Requirements: See outlined below. English Language Proficiency. Podiatrists appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Preferred Experience: Board Certified in Surgery Experience organizing and leading change in the surgical and operative areas of a complex tertiary health care system. Experience with knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards and requirements for surgical and operative areas of the hospital and ambulatory care setting. Experience providing an administrative and clinical perspective for development, implementation and evaluation of a strategic plans across the organization. Experience working with surgical section chiefs, executive leadership, nursing leadership, ancillary leadership and others to develop and achieve objectives for quality goals, improvement and growth. Supervising and managing the work of other staff members in the surgical and operative setting. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-4 Podiatrist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; light carrying, under 15 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Walking (1hrs); Standing (2hrs); Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Mental/ Emotional Stability.
