The Sewing Machine Operator will be working at the Orlando Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, in Orlando, Florida.

Duties

Some of the duties and responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to): Operate industrial power sewing machines, button machines, stamping machines, and thermos-patch machines. Perform alterations and repairs on a variety of materials and other fabric items. Thread the machine, wind bobbins, adjust tension, and oil parts. Use the knee or foot controls to start and stop the sewing machine at the same time they are using hand-eye coordination in positioning and guiding materials under the needle for stitching. Sewing minor alinements and positioning of material or mending of utility organization items such as hospital pajamas, blankets, linens, canvas pouches, and fatigue clothes where usefulness of the item is more important than the appearance. Perform other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

(Screen-Out): Ability to perform the duties of a Sewing Machine Operator without more than normal supervision. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position. Your resume must support the description selected by providing detailed documentation of the duties you have performed in positions you have held and/or training you have successfully completed. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Operators sit for long periods with continual movement of hands, arms, and fingers in placing items in position and sewing. They handle lightweight items up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds) continually, and occasionally they handle items up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds). The work is performed inside in well lighted and ventilated areas. Often these areas are noisy because numerous machines are operating at one time. Operators are subject to possible needle punctures and minor thread cuts Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
