This position is located at the Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
Duties
This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles.
Incumbent will serve as a working leader for the authorized full time employees, consisting of: WG-8 Maintenance Worker, WG-8 Gardener, WG-6 Cemetery Technicians, WG 5 & 6 Cemetery Caretakers. The incumbent may also lead other cemetery caretakers and/or laborers as assigned, who accomplish all aspects of interment and grounds/maintenance responsibilities throughout the cemetery organization. Exercises leadership responsibilities in addition to normal labor-related task as a member of the interment and grounds/maintenance crew.
Operates cemetery equipment to include, but not limited to, the following: tractors; mini excavator with front-end loader and attachments, equipment such as mulchers, sprayers, spreaders; backhoes; frontend loaders; dump trucks to 5 tons GVW and over; attachments; passenger vehicles including vans and sedans as necessary; forklifts; bobcats; street sweepers; pickup trucks; and other equipment as required by the position on a daily or as needed basis.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/04/2024.
Your background must demonstrate work involved in leading work pertaining to operation of equipment such as graders, tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements: Work includes walking, standing, sitting, bending, and carrying heavy loads. Work may be performed in closely confined areas. Moderate effort is required in operating various types of vehicles and equipment. Must use the full range of upper and lower body extremities. The incumbent will be operating power tools and equipment for extended periods of time. He/she will be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 decibels. Incumbent will spend long periods sitting behind a computer monitor using computer equipment exposing him/her to repetitive motion injury and eyestrain.
Working Conditions: Some work is performed in an office setting; however, some of the work is performed outdoors, with exposures to all types of environmental factors including rain, sleet, snow, cold, heat, dust, etc. The incumbent will be required to wear protective clothing such as hard hat, goggles, breathing mask, and face shield, as well as protective hearing devices and safety shoes/boots.
