The position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Division of the Facility Management Department within the Facility Support Directorate located in the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago Illinois.
Duties
Major Duties:
Performs the full range of pipefitting tasks from the helper level up to and including some tasks normally performed at the journeyman level, under close supervision. Representative tasks include installing, replacing, or repairing various pipes, shutoff valves, joints, unions, flanges, safety valves, ceiling or wall radiators, and other fixtures; setting and adjusting die to cutter or threader, and measuring, cutting or drilling holes and openings in walls or floors; eliminating water hammer in steam lines by changing pitch of branches to risers; and covering pipes with insulating material. Uses tools of the trade such as stocks and dies, cutters, threaders, reamers, flanges, pullers, wrenches, hammers, electric hand-drill, star-drill, and Chisels.
Installs/replaces/repairs piping, fittings, shut-off valves, sectionalizing valves, etc. to water mains, fire hydrants, and hot and cold water lines.
Installs threaded pipe, copper pipe and all types of water main pipe. Removes, overhauls and replaces fire hydrants.
Installs sinks, lavatories, stools, urinals and installs/repairs/replaces flush valves on commodes, urinals, emergency showers, etc.
Unplugs stools, urinals and all drain lines (i.e., lavatories, drinking fountains, kitchen equipment, morgue, etc.)
Unplugs main sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines. Sanitized water mains after installation or after breaks have been repaired, using the proper chemicals.
Drains, cleans and inspects hot water tanks, heater coils and residential water heaters.
Installs filters for air and water systems (i.e., air compressors, x-ray and dental equipment, etc.)
Installs, repairs and/or regulates shower mixing valves, bulb-controlled or pneumatic 3-way mixing valves.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
