This position is located with the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station in Asheville, NC. The employee performs as Editorial Assistant who serves as a source of information and assistance to editors and desktop publishers and has responsibility for appropriate format and style of technical and nontechnical material prepared in accordance with established agency policy. Duties

Proofread, review, and edit written products such as reports, briefing papers, newsletters, etc. Collaborate with authors to proofread and edit publications for accuracy and adherence to style. Provide guidance on style, format, graphics, and technical development of publications. Record information on published publications, articles and newsletters into a centralized database. Update internal communication tracking systems (e.g. Excel, SharePoint, etc.) with new information as it is made available. Create correspondence and manage files for printing contracts. Correspond with authors to verify technical and administrative details. Use industry standard desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe inDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Microsoft products).

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade (salary) if applicable; and description of duties performed. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-7: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as three or more of the following: Assisting in the entire publishing process, from editing to printing or electronic distribution. Proofreading manuscript copies for publications that are disseminated internally or externally. Correcting grammatical mistakes, misspellings, incorrect punctuation, inconsistencies in usages, discrepancies between charts, tables, and other graphics and poorly structured sentences. Applying publications guidelines, practices, and terminology used in editorial production, layout, typesetting, and printing, to prepare materials for production. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
