This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of recurring routine tasks in range management, as a crew member or individual worker.

Duties

Counts livestock as they are entering or exiting allotments. Counts livestock on range allotments. Inspects allotments before and after grazing season to document vegetation utilization. Document and report unpermitted livestock on Forest Service Lands. Document and report permit violations to superiors. Assists in roundup in case of unauthorized livestock use. Provides identification tags to permittees and oversees attachments to livestock. Inspects conditions of boundary and drift fences and water developments. Checks progress of fence construction by permittees, and salt and feed locations. Serves as a crew member on range improvement construction and revegetation projects that include construction of fences, cattle guards, water developments, repairing fences, prescribed burning, seeding and fertilization. Assists in range analysis duties by driving stakes, stretching tapes and recording plants identified by higher grade employee. Learns to identify range plants and soil types common to local area; receives assignments which provide basic understanding in the use of aerial photos.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-03: Applicants must have six months of general experience (any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation); OR successful completion of 1 year of study above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in a combination of courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences; OR an appropriate combination of general experience and education above high school as described above; OR completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than one year at a technical school or through a military or government sponsored training program that was designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, technical school, junior college, college or university. Examples of General Experience includes: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Cleaned tools and equipment; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general labor; Worked on a landscape or construction crew; Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
