As a Physical Scientist, you will develop and implement plans for a variety of projects covered under the Abandoned Mineral Lands (AML) project funds.

Duties

Coordinates and implements an abandoned mineral lands mitigation, restoration, and monitoring program for two park units Coordinates oversight of non-federal natural gas operations and ensures compliance with federal regulations and agency policies for one park unit Builds relationships and collaborates with other federal agencies, state agencies, and non-governmental organizations to plan, fund, and implement mitigation and restoration projects to protect resources and human health and safety

Requirements

  • You are required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

  • This position requires walking long distances carrying field gear and navigating across steep, forested, and uneven terrain away from roads and trails to access project sites.
  • A valid state driver's license is required.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, you must meet both the basic requirement and the minimum qualifications for this position. Basic Requirement: A. Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics - OR - B. Possess a combination of education and experience. This includes education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: A. Possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service, conducting field assessments of conditions, hazards, and features or abandoned mineral sites; recommending mitigation strategies to protect natural resources and human safety at those abandoned sites; implementing projects to mitigate, reclaim or restore abandoned mineral sites in order to reduce safety hazards and natural resource impacts; and collaborating with external groups on the planning or implementation of natural resource projects. - OR - B. Possess three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD in physical science, engineering, mathematics, or another closely related field. - OR - C. Possess a combination of specialized experience as described in A and graduate education as described in B that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. (Please note: only graduate education in excess of the first two years may be used in this calculation.) Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
