Incumbent is the Supervisor of the Carpentry/Lock Shop. Through subordinates, the incumbent is responsible for repairs and maintenance of building interiors and exteriors. The incumbent is responsible for all locking devices and automatic door operations.
Duties
He/she prepares and processes the required paperwork to execute and accomplish work associated with his/her shop. The incumbent provides leadership in the trades supervised.
Evaluates the units of work performed by the shops supervised and is aware of the backlog of work in the shops and realigns or reassigns employees to effectively produce a smooth flow of work.
Promotes and administers a variety of management programs for the units supervised such as safety, cost reduction, incentive awards, beneficial suggestion, and quality assurance with policies and procedures established by medical center management and Facilities Management Service Line Executives.
Incumbent supports Affirmative Action plans, Bonds, and CFC programs. Adheres to all provisions of the Equal Opportunity Program in accordance with OPM and VA regulations and established medical center guidelines.
Ensures that all shop employees are knowledgeable of and comply with safety rules, have had all safety training, and that safety program requirements are met.
Provides assistance to the FMSL Executive, FMSL Deputy, and M&O Chief, and Healthcare Engineers of the service line.
Responsible for the efficient and economical use of all resources required for the proper functioning of the Carpentry/Lock Shop. Incumbent is knowledgeable of engineering concepts and practices. Must be able to adequately solve problems that arise in
daily operations.
Makes safety inspections of all equipment and functions under his/her supervision and records the results of the inspections.
Issues work orders to other units on work which cannot be handled by the section.
Oversees that a reliable preventive maintenance program is always maintained on all equipment to minimize unscheduled equipment and systems down time.
Prepares and/or reviews the reports required of the section and submits them to the Facilities Management Service Line Executive office. Reviews operations under his/her supervision for efficient use of manpower and possible materials savings. Submits recommendations to his/her supervisor.
Checks all requests for materials from shop personnel for correctness of nomenclature, estimated prices and need, to prevent overstocking. Reviews the condition of equipment on a regular basis to insure that worn out items are being replaced promptly. Prepares request specifications of equipment to be replaced.
Predicts short term utility fluctuations and anticipates utility operations accordingly. Ensures subordinates properly, safely, and efficiently operate the physical plant during extreme weather conditions. Formulates and disseminates stand operating procedures in advance of unusual or emergency situations.
Incumbent may be required to work extended hours and odd shifts during periods of emergency needs of the medical center.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 4:00pm (subject to change based on agency needs)

Physical Requirements: The position requires lifting, carrying, puling/pushing and steadying adjustments or repairs and may require kneeling, bending, squatting, reaching over, under and into equipment while in a cramped or awkward position. He/she works off ladders, scaffolds and platforms and must be able to carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds.
