This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of surveying assignments associated with the Forest's engineering and cadastral surveying work.

Duties

Carries out standardized operations that are of varied and complex sequence. Uses simple hand instruments such as hand levels and compasses to collect land survey data. Uses compass and tape to conduct simple traverse surveys. Makes rough estimates of yardage to be excavated for small land areas or determines approximate locations to be mapped. Utilizes specialized skill, requiring concentration, where manual computations involve elementary arithmetic processes made more complex by the number and variety of manipulations involved and by the speed with which successive readings are called. Recognizes inconsistencies in data based on knowledge of standard sequences. Performs recording assignments where field information is generally prescribed, but of a descriptive nature. Obtains adequate data in accordance with its use. Performs assignments which involve use of judgment in estimating distances, in sketching, and in composing brief notes. Records and measures areas through use of manual and electronic recording and measuring devices. Reports instances of inadequate recording and operation due to equipment failure or deviation or changing conditions which have an effect on the operation. Takes soundings involving the use of a lead-line to measure depths in areas of sedimentation.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-04: Applicants must have six months of any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level; OR an associate's degree or two years of successfully completed education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Examples of General Experience includes: Observed technical work, such as construction inspector or surveyor work. Performed general office duties, such as filing and maintaining simple records. Performed simple arithmetic computations. Other work experience, paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. Examples of unpaid work include volunteer work, such as at a park, youth camp, scouting organization, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc. Examples of specialized experience includes: Technical work which provides knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and terminology of surveying to complete assignments. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, working as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector; OR served as crew person on land surveys requiring special rodding and leveling procedures, using various types of rods; OR served as pacer of a leveling party and determined positions for the crew to keep observations balanced and instruments level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
