This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical work in support of the range function.
Duties
Schedules and executes a variety of rangeland management support assignments related to range conservation programs. Assists in range capacity studies such as allotment analysis and production utilization studies.
Using accepted indicator plants, determines range readiness dates. Conducts routine forage production studies, based on air-dry weight of vegetation. Monitors both short and long-range plans for compliance with range management goals and objectives.
Assists in planning a wide variety of range-related projects such as revegetation, fencing, spring developments, cattle guard placement, and erosion control procedures. Makes recommendations for amendments to range management plans.
Gathers rangeland management data exercising initiative and resourcefulness to make changes or deviate from the schedule to incorporate additional coverage requested or to adjust to conditions found at the work site.
Participates in noxious plant control, seeding, or similar projects by flagging boundaries, operating equipment, and carrying out kill studies. Identifies plant specimens in the field and collects and prepares specimens.
Develops preliminary plans for implementing improvements to grazing allotment when a variety of range vegetation methods of installation and other such factors are involved and oversees implementation.
Works with permittees in preparing preliminary designs and plans for a variety of standardized revegetation project.

Qualifications

GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5).
GS-06: There is no substitution of education for this position.
Examples of specialized experience include: Conducted tests and inspections using work methods and techniques that were standard to rangeland management functions. Recommended or performed rangeland management support work such as the installation of boundary and drift fences, water developments, implementation of re-vegetation projects, or the treatment of noxious weeds. Performed a variety of assignments in support of rangeland management programs or projects where methods and techniques were generally applicable but sometimes required minor deviations based on field conditions.
