This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical assistance in engineering programs.

Duties

Performs work related to reconnaissance of forest development roads. Establishes control points and route grade lines. Collects data on soil, topography, gradient, stream location, and related physical characteristics. Makes computations from tables to estimate road location. Marks and records control points. May participate in the road survey as a skilled crew member or party chief or may inspect the performance of contract surveyors. Assists in the design of roads and related structures such as culverts and retaining walls. Collects, computes, and analyzes data from field notes. Prepares, inspects, and processes data using computerized road design systems. Reviews printouts, cross sections, and profiles, and recommends traverses, gradients, culvert locations, and other aspects of the final road design. May serve as an expert draftsperson, preparing final plans and drawings for review by the designer. Performs routine inspection of construction activities. Collects and analyzes materials samples, and measures characteristics such as road widths, culverts, and slope. Compares findings with plans and contract specifications, reporting the results to the COR or ER.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Your application and resume must clearly show that you possess the experience requirements. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics (at least 6 of the 24 semester hours must have been in drafting if the position has been designated by a drafting area of specialization); OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university with courses related to the occupation of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: Work assisting higher-graded technicians and engineers who work in surveying and civil engineering specializations. Processing data according to well-defined methods and established formulas using mathematics, elementary algebra and geometry, and standard formulas. Operating and making operational adjustments to a variety of surveying and testing equipment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
