Employee performs all duties of a locksmith worker and is assigned to the Building and Maintenance Unit, Maintenance and Repair Section, Engineering Service, at the Miami VA Healthcare System (MVAHS). Work includes duplicating, cutting keys and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms including computerized control system, editing and maintaining the facilities space file in DHCP and updating space changes.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of internal structure and operating characteristics of locking devices used at the Facility and of their working interrelationships with related components. Rework and refinish substitute parts and fabricating parts to close fit. Coordinate work with personnel of other shops and crafts. Demonstrate knowledge of the Millennium Online Access Control System or equivalent and be able to use the computer systems necessary for implementing of same. Cut keys required for issue and replacement as required, does not maintain "extra" keys. Ensures absolute key control and carefully monitor the key accountability system in use. Physical Requirements: Work at this level seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 7 kilograms (15 pounds). The locksmith worker frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels and works in awkward positions when installing and operating locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. Working Conditions: Employee works in a fully secured Lockshop containing all required tools, equipment and materials, and performs 60% of preliminary work therein. The remainder of the time spent working is in the field, both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasion, scrapes and bruises, and the possibility of burns while using acetylene torches and soldering irons. Must wear face shield for protection when operating key cutting machine and electrical grinder. Employee must follow all safety precautions.
