This position is located within the Intramural Training Office (ITO), Office of the Scientific Director (OSD), National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Duties

Develop and manage a comprehensive NHGRI Division of Intramural Research fellowship program, including (1) recruitment, (2) orientation and mentoring, (3) professional development, (4) career counseling, and (5) program evaluation. Evaluate Intramural Research Program goals and policies for strategic planning related to recruitment, orientation, mentoring, professional development, and program evaluation. Serve as the NHGRI liaison to the NIH Office of Training and Education, as well as various NHGRI and NIH committees or groups involved in coordinating recruitment and training of scientists at NHGRI and NIH. Responsible for directing a strategic training and career development program. Designs, plans, and implements an ongoing educational program for fellows and other NHGRI scientific staff, including but not limited to seminars, courses, and lectures. Manage the necessary support for incoming fellows to ensure their prompt assimilation into the IRP, NHGRI, and NIH; coordinates with other NHGRI offices to ensure that orientation is done timely and effectively. Alert trainees concerning requirements for mandatory NIH training including research ethics and associated deadlines. Develop outreach activities to increase awareness of research training opportunities in the Division, with an emphasis on ensuring a diverse pool of applicants for these positions. Originate, plan, and supervise the collection, development, and distribution of information pertaining to NHGRI fellowship opportunities.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-14 level, if you meet BOTH of the following qualification requirements: Education: You must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.) AND Experience: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: designing, planning, and reviewing training programs for pre and post-doctoral fellows and scientific staff; conducting recruitment and placement activities for pre and post- doctoral scientific trainees; designing and implementing standard operating procedures for the recruitment and selection of pre and post-doctoral fellows and trainees; and advising on grants administration processes applicable to intramural investigators and trainees.
